Luiz O.F. Penalva, PhD, joined the Greehey Children’s Cancer Research Institute in July of 2004 with major faculty responsibilities as a Principal Investigator in Molecular Oncogenesis, Founding Member of the Greehey Children’s Cancer Research Institute and Assistant Professor in the Department of Cellular and Structural Biology. Dr. Penalva attended the University of Sao Paulo, Brazil and received his Ph.D. from the University of Madrid (UAM), Spain. His post-doctoral work was completed at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) in Heidelberg, Germany and Duke University in Durham, N.C.

Dr. Penalva has been honored with fellowships by the Ministry and Science and Education in Spain, the European Molecular Biology Organization, and the Raychem/Rogers/Morrish Fellowship at Duke University.

Dr. Penalva brings a wealth of experience in molecular biology gained in over a decade of experience in world class institutions. His laboratory work at the GCCRI will focus on functional genomics and post-transcriptional regulation. He will contribute his expertise to the GCCRI, to the Department of Cellular and Structural Biology, as well as to the broad UTHSCSA campus.
